These colourful buildings are Singapore’s famous Peranakan shop houses. They are all over Singapore but most people go to Katong and Joo Chiat to see them.
Shop houses were introduced to Singapore by Chinese traders in the 19th century. They always have a shop on the ground floor with living accommodation above.
At the front of the building is a walkway known as the 5 foot way. These were introduced by Sir Stamford Raffles. They give people a space to walk and shelter from the rain, sun and traffic.

Unique Peranakan decorations.

The Peranakan people loved to decorate their houses in bright colours. Often they would use imported tiles on both the walls and the floor. Today the Singapore government has made great steps to conserve these stunning buildings. The area of Joo Chiat became Singapore’s first heritage town in 2011. With this title comes great responsibility in conserving the past. Owners must maintain the shophouses to the best of their abilities. You cannot knock a shop house down and there are strict rules for any renovations.
Our most popular food tour takes place in Katong. The shop house provide an excellent backdrop for us. They are full of character and history.
