One of our favourite places to visit on our food tour in Little India is the Tekka market.

Located in the heart of Little India the Tekka market is a great place to eat and shop.

We made this short video to give you a taste of life there.

The Tekka Market is located in the heart of Little India. It is at the start of Serangoon road. Right opposite the Little India Arcade. On the ground floor you can find 2 different markets.

First we have the wet market. A wet market in Singapore is where you can buy fresh produce. Fish, meat, fruit and veg are all available. At the Tekka Centre we have one of the largest selections in Singapore. Often you will see chef’s and hawkers here buying their ingredients. The wet market opens early in the morning and is almost over by lunchtime. This is common all over Singapore. The same thing happens in Geylang Serai for example.

The second market is of course the hawker market. The Tekka centre has 2 different sections in their hawker market. One section is dedicated to the local Chinese community. Here you can have the best prawn noodles, pork rib soup and dumplings. This side of the hawker market is not halal. The other side of the hawker market is halal. This is the Indian side. Briyani, Murtabak and some of the best Dosai are found here. It is always a very busy environment. Office workers sit with manual labourers and enjoy their favourite dishes.

Our food tour in Little India and Kampong Glam starts off at the Tekka centre. It is such an important part in Singapore’s food story.
