Racial Harmony Day 2021 will be on Wednesday 21st July. The day is a special day in Singapore that commemorates the race riots of 1964. Schools across the country mark the day by celebrating Singapore’s different cultures and races. Some schools encourage the students to wear traditional outfits such as a Malay Baju Kurung or a Chinese cheongsam. It is a day that celebrates our multi culturalism, and one that re-enforces what it means to be Singaporean in today’s world.

How we can help your school celebrate Racial Harmony Day

Since 2016 Singabites has been hosting learning journeys around our home island. One of our most popular periods is the run up to Racial harmony Day. Our Racial Harmony Day experiences immerse students into Singapore’s different cultures. We aim to give students a new understanding of the cultures that they see but maybe don’t understand. Our team of engaging guides and facilitators are on hand to lead the students through their tour (either our in classroom virtual tours or our in the field learning journeys.) Each experience is accompanied by an interactive worksheet that encourages the students to participate and ask questions. Let’s take a look at the 2 options.

In the field learning journeys

Let’s face it, we’d all love to be able to get back to pre-covid days. Our learning journeys took students out of the classrooms and into the streets and businesses of some of our major cultural hotspots. Using our network of guides, business owners and cultural ambassadors we tailor make our learning journeys to give students a behind the scenes look at how each community lives and works in Singapore. We visit heritage businesses and learn how things have changed over time. We have members of the community speak to the students so first hand story telling can be acheived. In each area we explore the students can enjoy an array of culturally relevant bites. From Peranakan kuehs in Katong to Deepavali sweets on Serangoon road.

In classroom Virtual learning journeys

In order to keep everyone safe and sound we have created virtual learning journeys. These popular classroom experiences use videos, photographs and our interactive worksheets to take the students on a journey through time. We learn about the history of each area we are exploring including hearing from residents who have spent all their lives in that neighbourhood. We watch interviews with cultural leaders and have first hand story telling from our facilitators. For each class we even deliver cultural bites for the students to enjoy.
