Singapore street art is perhaps not as famous worldwide as some of London or New York’s art. In recent years Singapore has benefitted from the works of many local artists. One of our most popular is Yip Yew Chong. You can see his murals dotted around the island. On our Shiok Chinatown food tour we stop at a few of his pieces of work along the route. Our guests always have photos taken with them as you can see here.

Who is Yip Yew Chong?

Yew Chong or YC as he is known started to take art seriously around 2015. He was working as an accountant and for a few years was able to balance his full time job with his love of art. In 2018 YC took the leap and left the corporate world to pursue his passion.

YC is most famous for his murals that appear all over Singapore. He also does sketches, digital drawings and even videos. A common trait of YC’s art work is that they always tell a story and have great detail. Many of the murals around Singapore reflect YC’s childhood memories. Perhaps this is what makes them so popular with us Singaporeans. Remembering a more simple time.

Where you can see YC’s street art.

YC’s murals are all over Singapore and even in other countries. He has been commissioned to do work in China and Cambodia. Here in Singapore some of his most famous street murals are in Chinatown. On our Chinatown food tour we pass by a few of these. One of our favourites is the Barber scene on Everton road. This depicts a street side barber that was a popular site in 60’s and 70’s Singapore. On Smith street you can see his Letter Writer mural. This depicts one of the old trades of letter writing that used to be popular in Chinatown. Those people clever enough to write could be paid a few pennies to write a letter home to family and loved ones.
