If there’s one thing that Singapore has a lot of, it’s ice cream or gelato shops. Sitting a sweltering 1 degree above the equator every day is a perfect day for an ice desert.

One young Singaporean has taken his love for gelato and turned it into his life. Edwin is the mastermind behind Birds of Paradise. This popular gelato shop is on East Coast road. Right in the heart of Katong.

Back when he was a kid, Edwin fell in love with gelato. He decided he wanted to make different flavours for his family and friends. Edwin decided to concentrate on botanical flavours instead of the more recognised pairings. As a result when you enter his shop on East Coast road you won’t see chocolate, vanilla or strawberry on offer. Instead you can feast on elderflower, white chrysanthemum and basil. Not only are these unique flavours delicious but also healthy, sort of.

When we visit the shop on our food tour we notice an addictive smell upon entering. This is thyme which they use in the cones that the gelato is served in.

Singapore food stars.

Although the shop has only been open for a few years it has already gained Singapore fame. Birds of Paradise is in the Michelin guide to Singapore. Last year they opened their second outlet in Jewel at Changi airport.

We often pop in to say hi to the team on our Katong evening food tour. Our guests are always impressed by the unique flavours on offer. We also use Edwin for some of our corporate food tours.

If you are in Katong or Jewel, please go and say hello and try the best gelato in Singapore.

Where you can find them.

You can find the original Birds of Paradise at 63 East Coast road. Alternatively visit them at Jewel Changi airport.
