Hjh Maimunah is a name well loved here in Singapore. It’s Kampong cuisine is perfect for anyone looking for some traditional Malay and Indonesian dishes. The word Kampong means village and reflects the old school style of cooking.

Hjh Maimunah itself is a family run business. The story all started in 1992. Founder Madam Mahiran Abdul Rahman cooked her family recipes for pilgrims. They were in Singapore on their way to Mecca. Over time more dishes were added to her menu. The small restaurant in Kampong Glam started to become busy not just during the Haj. Fast forward to today and Singapore can now enjoy 2 restaurants. One in Kampong Glam at Jalan Pisang and one in Geylang Serai at the top of Joo Chiat road.

We have used Hjh Maimunah for both our small group food tours and our corporate food tours. We are always greeted with warmth from the staff. Favourite dishes amongst our tour guides include Ikan Bakar. This is a grilled fish, normally local sea bass. We can also recommend you try Sotong hitam. Which is squid cooked in it’s ink. You must always try their famous Sundanese grilled chicken as well.

Keeping it in the family

Madam Mahiran has recently passed the running of her business down to her children. Maria and Ismail (daughter and son) have spent their lives in the kitchens and ding rooms of the restaurant. They have embraced the new challenges and brought the business into modern times. As with a lot of similar businesses in Singapore this has meant change. Hjh Maimunah now offer deliveries as well as a very popular catering arm.

We often see Malay weddings on our food tours being held at the huge banqueting hall they have in Joo Chiat.
