An empty Singapore Changi Airport

When you fly to Singapore one of the pleasures happens the moment you land. Singapore Changi airport has been named the world’s best airport for the 8th consecutive year. With an array of shopping facilities and a huge option of great dining available it is no wonder our visitors love flying to Changi. The airport also boasts a cinema, multiple family zones and play areas and of course the famous swimming pool. In fact many of our food tour guests tell us that they try to get to the airport hours before they fly just to soak up the experience.

Flying to Singapore during covid

The world is a bit different at the moment and our beloved Changi airport is no different. Recently our founder James flew back to the UK and took these rather haunting pictures of what is usually a bustling terminal. Due to the many safety restrictions still in place in Singapore the airports lounges are mostly closed. Many of the shops and restaurants are not open or are running a skeleton service. We can’t enjoy the pool or the cinema but it is still possible to enjoy the comfortable seats readily available and get your free wifi. The airport is eerily quiet. There’s a maximum of 3 or 4 flights leaving at any 2 hour period so there are hardly any passengers. Jewel shopping centre is open and is a lot less crowded than normal. So there are some positives to take out of all of this.

Who can fly to Singapore?

At the moment the list is short. Residents and citizens of Singapore can return home but are still advised against all travel. A strict quarantine is in place for everyone returning. The government is looking at opening safe corridor routes with less infected countries. This seems like a logical step to gradually and safely re-opening Singapore. The countries mentioned are Japan, Thailand and South Korea. These countries already have a business travel green corridor in place. Other countries like Australia and New Zealand are also being discussed.

When can I fly to Singapore?

The short answer is not this year. Unless absolutely necessary. However things are changing slowly.
Most governments around the world are still advising no travel unless absolutely necessary. Many countries are also insisting on strict quarantine measures for everyone entering their country. Singapore is no different. But slowly things are happening to bring travel back. The green corridors to lower hit countries will also include fast testing. Thereby all travellers will be tested upon arrival at the airport. They will quarantine until the results are ready (usually 24 hours) and if negative they are free to go. This is a big step in the right direction and hopefully will work out for the best and encourage further easing.
